One of the Lower Mainland's hidden treasures in New Westminster has been right under our noses for some time. Nestled midhill on uptown Sixth Street, the Royal Tandoori Indian Restaurant continues to grow under the careful direction of chef Jasminder Singh with 20 years of experience from the province of Punjab. 

   Jasminder Singh originally learned to cook as a young boy from his family in Ludhiana, India, where he eventually owned a successful restaurant. He has brought those recipes to the Royal Tandoori, where he and partner Michael Kesar are creating their own tradition.

   And create they do. It starts with the nan, tasty Indian bread recommended with every meal. The Royal Tandoori serves a family-sized, 18" nan for just $1.75. That's twice the size found in most restaurants!

   The mango butter chicken is an absolute masterpiece, prepared in a clay over with herbs, tomatoes, cream and a delicious mango butter sauce. This is chef Singh's family recipe.

   The saag lamb virtually sings to your tongue, with curried spinach offering a wondrous harmony. Vegetarians are not forgotten, with 10 different meatless dishes on the menu vying for you attention. Try the Jalfrezi curry, one of Singh's specialties which features mixed vegetables in curry, onions, ginger, garlic and spices for $8.95.

   Singh doesn't write his recipes down- "they're not on paper, they're in my brain," he says with a smile - so he doesn't think you should be limited by what's on the menu. You may love his mango butter chicken, but don't be afraid to ask for it with lemon or milk instead.

   Customer satisfaction is number one for Jasminder and his staff. The food is delectable, and the quantities are generous. The dining room is spacious with a casual west coast theme and full liquor menu. Visit once and you'll be sure to come back many times, with friends.
